How to compress a video

When to compress a video
Phone videos are huge, and many places limit file size: Gmail attachments stop at 25 MB, and chat apps and upload forms have their own limits. Tips for the best result
- "Smallest file" limits the video to 720p, great for chats and email. "Balanced" keeps up to 1080p. "Better quality" keeps the original resolution.
- Videos that are already well compressed may not shrink much; if the result would be larger, you get your original MP4 back.
- Large files take a while: watch the conversion bar to see how long is left.

Frequently asked questions
How much smaller will my video get?
Phone videos often shrink by half or more with "Balanced", and more with "Smallest file". In our tests, a 1.8 MB clip became about 0.8 MB.
Which formats can I compress?
MP4, M4V, MOV, WEBM, MKV and AVI. The result is always an MP4.
Is the sound kept?
Yes. Audio is kept and encoded as AAC, the standard for MP4.
