When to compress an image
Large photos slow down websites, fill up email attachments and take forever to upload. The ConvertKiwi image compressor makes JPG, PNG and WEBP files smaller while keeping them looking the same at normal size, and it keeps each image in its original format. If an image is already so well compressed that we cannot make it smaller, you get the original back, never a bigger file.

Tips for the best result
- JPGs are re-encoded at quality 72 with an optimized encoder, which is where most of the savings come from.
- PNGs are reduced to a smart palette of up to 256 colors. This works wonderfully for screenshots and graphics; images with very smooth gradients may show slight banding.
- For the smallest possible file, also reduce the image dimensions: a photo shown 800 pixels wide does not need to be 4000 pixels wide.
About these formats
JPG: The most common photo format. It uses compression to keep files small, and it opens everywhere, but it does not support transparency.
PNG: A lossless image format that keeps every pixel sharp and supports transparent backgrounds. Great for screenshots, logos and graphics.
WEBP: A modern image format from Google. It makes files much smaller than JPG or PNG, but some older apps and websites still cannot open it.
Frequently asked questions
Will compressing change my image format?
No. A JPG stays a JPG, a PNG stays a PNG and a WEBP stays a WEBP.
How much smaller will my images get?
Typical photos shrink by half or more. In our tests, a large JPG went from 1.7 MB to about 0.55 MB. You will see the exact numbers after each file is done.
What if my image is already optimized?
Then compressing it again would not help, so we return your original file instead of a larger one.
